Roof hardening and beyond: climate adaptation opportunities

Adapt Now series #2 | October 2025

Climate adaptation means adjusting to the effects of climate change in order to reduce the risks of increasingly frequent or intense weather events, or chronic climatic change. But if adaptation is poorly designed or inadequately maintained, it can introduce new risks. In our new “Adapt Now” Series, we address both the benefits and risks of adaptation measures and look at best practice examples. Why? To inspire action by sharing practical information, innovative solutions, and lessons learned.

Adapt Now #2 focuses on the importance of roof hardening measures and how they can help businesses safeguard against the impact of increasing extreme wind and hail events. They also deliver sustainability co-benefits, for example via improved insulation. However, such measures can also lead to unintended load consequences and problems from improper installation, as well as several other potential issues businesses need to be aware of.
